Zainab Abu Salem

"Suicide Bomber Zainab Abu Salem; Her head separated from her pure body, and her Ra'ala [Muslim headscarf] remains to decorate [her face]. Her place is in Paradise, where in the highest heavens, Zainab ... sister [who has been raised to the level] of men."

English translation of the Arabic text in the Hamas children's newspaper Alfatah of September 22, 2004, in praise of 18 year-old suicide bomber and children's television presenter Zainab Ali Issa Abu Salem.

Zainab Abu Salem came from the Askar refugee camp near the West Bank city of Nablus. She was carrying a bag of explosives toward a crowded bus stop in the French Hill neighborhood of Jerusalem at 3:40 PM on September 22, 2004 when two Israeli border police stationed at the adjacent hitchhiking station spotted her and moved to stop her. They asked to see her identity papers and search the bag she was carrying on her back. She argued for a few seconds then detonated her bomb, killing herself and the two police, plus wounding sixteen people. The bag had three to five kilograms of explosive packed inside shrapnel. After ambulances carried away the wounded, police and volunteers searched the immediate area for bomb parts and bits of human flesh.

The Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigade, affiliated with Yasir Arafat’s Fatah, boasted she was theirs. Zainab volunteered for a suicide attack, saying she wanted to avenge Palestinian militants killed recently in Nablus. Her father, Ali Abu Salem, 48, collapsed and his wife, Sahar, wailed at the news of their daughter's attack.

The heroic policemen were kids themselves, conscripts serving their country. Corporal Mamoya Tahio, 20 was from Rehovot. Corporal Menashe Komemi, 19, lived in Moshav Aminadav on the outskirts of Jerusalem. One of them died immediately. The other one lingered to die on the operating table at Hadassah University Hospital at Mount Scopus. Komemi is survived by his parents and seven siblings. His cousin, Ra'anan Komemi, was killed during his military service in a gun battle with Palestinians in Nablus.

Avigail Hilini, 22, was going home to the West Bank settlement of Mitzpeh Yericho when she saw her, "I saw the terrorist coming, I knew she was a terrorist straight away, you could see the tension and cruelty in her face. She was totally covered in a large brown shawl, except for her face and eyes. I saw that the Border Policeman was checking her, and I [calmed] down a bit. Seconds later she exploded. I saw people running everywhere and I ran myself. I started shaking and crying."

Zainab was the fourth of ten children in her family, who were well off for Palestinians. They owned the television station where she appeared on a children's show. She lived with her aunt, Salwa Abu Salem, a 49 year old teacher, a dozen people in one house. Zainab had just graduated from high school and was talking about going to college, before she blew herself up.

At 3 am the morning after Zainab's attack, two trucks full of Israeli soldiers came to the house, showed Zainab's family a photograph of her severed head, asked what room was hers, and blew that room up. It tore out the entire first floor. Her uncle, Mustafa Shinawi, apparently approved of her suicide bombing, saying, "Every Palestinian finds his own suitable way to protest the Israeli oppression."

Salway claims she had no idea that Zainab was going on a suicide mission. Says Salwa, "I didn't just lose my niece, I lost trust. I believe the families of those that killed themselves did not know what was happening. If a parent knew that a child was planning an attack they would never let their child do it. No parent would."

The Palestinian Authority TV uses images of such suicide bombings to indoctrinate their young to aspire to sweet Shahada Martyrdom in a popular segment called the "Farewell letter clip". Civilians are shown attacking Israelis. The body of such a shahad is brought to his mother, who kisses him, then raises her hand above her mouth to give the traditional Arab call of joy. Then, she dramatically hands the rifle to her next son so he too can die as a shahad. Arafat himself has appeared on PA children's TV, telling them, "Is it not the greatest message to the world, when a child dies for Allah?"

Mothers of martyrs are proud of their sons. Being the mother of a suicide bomber in Palestine is akin to being the mother of a doctor in America. When she walks the streets, Palestinians say with admiration, "There goes the mother of the Shahid." The Saudis pay the mothers of suicide fodder thousands of dollars, which goes far to cushion the blow. Often, junior siblings with dim prospects see suicide bombing as the only contribution they can make to their family and a chance to enjoy an elevated status in their community, however briefly.

Yasser Arafat boasted his best weapon was the Palestinian mother's womb. Golda Meir sized the situation up, "We can only have peace with the Palestinians when they love their children more than they hate Israel."

Don't expect peace with the Palestinians anytime soon.

it is all in the koran, but it speaks only of men. who made the decision to veer from the males only mantra? how can a female attain paradise? did she then become one of the 72 virgins for the men who acheive shahid?

This is just stupid what you are claiming here. You have to know first what she went through to take that decision. Instead of calling for Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territories, you are now make fun of a dead person. I do not agree on what she was trying to do, but I cannot hold myself thinking of the background behind this all. Maybe, this was her least weapon after desperation, humiliation by Israeli soldiers who piss on Palestinians, destroy their homes, kill their kids and infants. Try to be fair and shed light on both sides. Israelis are not better than Palestinians, but they are worse because they refuse to withdraw and give the Palestinians a descent life. For sure there is no peace soon with Palestinians, because Israel does not want that. They want to keep occupying their land and humiliate them everyday

"Maybe, this was her least weapon after desperation, humiliation by Israeli soldiers who piss on Palestinians, destroy their homes, kill their kids and infants."

If you recall, this occupation came about because the Arab Muslims wanted to annihilate the Israelis. And still do. The Palestinians are not a peaceable people with whom any reasonable deal can be made.

"Try to be fair and shed light on both sides."

My fair opinion is that Palestinians are a depraved people who indoctrinate their children in insane hate and send them off to kill themselves for nothing. The more light shed on the Palestinian side, the less respect they get due to their barbarian ways.

"Israelis are not better than Palestinians, but they are worse because they refuse to withdraw and give the Palestinians a descent life."

Actually, Israelis are better than Palestinians in virtually every dimension. Israelis have built a democracy while the Palestinians have built a mafia state. Israelis have built up a real economy while Palestinians live on aid, of which the majority their leaders steal. Israelis profess a religion that is good and tolerant while Palestinians profess an evil religion of hate.

"For sure there is no peace soon with Palestinians, because Israel does not want that. They want to keep occupying their land and humiliate them everyday."

Palestinians don't need any help in humiliating themselves. They're the worst of the losers in a Middle Eastern losers culture. You could set the Israelis down anywhere on the planet and they'd make a paradise. You could set the Palestinians down anywhere on the planet and they would reproduce hell.

ah, but you are wrong, annon #2, i was NOT making fun of a dead person. i was showing the idiocy of the thinking and training that lead her to kill herself and others. the israeli's are not perfect, no man (or society) is, but they did NOT start this mess and as tantor points out, they are already out of gaza. are you saying that if israeli would just leave the west bank the palestinians would suddenly become peace-loving beatniks? give me a break.

Only to the sane people. The Palestinians think it is beautiful, suitable for elementary school children as a model to emulate.

I don't agree with what anyone's written so far. Palestinians are dignified, respectable people with a culture to be proud of. And most importantly, they are muslims. The Muslims are on the right path in this world, and if anyone doesn't believe that, then they sure will do when they die. Every single person who has ever lived on this earth will stand before Allah (swt) on the Day of Judgement. And if you think you can hurt muslims by writing offensive messages, then you can't. In fact, we pity all you disbelievers and the kind of lives you lead. If you have a head on your shoulders then become a Muslim.

Dignified, respectable people don't teach their children to blow themselves up and to kill their religious enemies. Muslims are on a morally inferior path that compels them to make war on all non-Muslims. If you want Muslims to get respect, then respect others. Stop killing people for your evil religion. Stop preaching hate for non-Muslims.

If being Muslim meant you had your head on straight, then Muslims would not be last in the parade of civilization, losers who are their own worst enemy.

And may I point out that the investigators can always tell who the suicide bomber was because it's their head which is blown from their shoulders. If you have no head on your shoulders, then you were the Muslim in the terror attack.

Perhaps teaching children to blow themselves up in order to kill a few of the muslim's enemies is not right, but teaching muslim teenagers and adults to hold guns and kill their enemies during war is right. And that is what most muslims in palestine are doing, and in other parts of the world where outsiders think they can barge in to muslim countries and make themselves at home. The world is deceived - America and "Israel" are under the impression that Palestine will soon be under the Zionists' control. That is in the hands of Allah (swt), not in the hands of Obama or Netanyahu any other president. Every Muslim standing on this earth is confident of our victory, because we are fighting for the sake of Allah - Lord and Creator of the Universe - while the rest of you are fighting for nothing.

The problem is that Muslims consider all non-Muslim lands in a state of war. Mohammed teaches you to fight all men until they submit to Allah, meaning that your evil religion indoctrinates you to make war on the world. Islam is a belligerent, intolerant, and backward religion which does not respect others.

Actually, every Muslim is not confident Islam is right. Many are converting to other religions because they are simply sick of Islam's inhumanity. You wouldn't need laws to kill apostates if every Muslim believed in Islam.

Being right and being confident are two unrelated things. Saddam was confident he would win any battle in Iraq. He's dead. Bin Laden was confident terror attacks on America would cause it to fold. Now Al Qaeda is mostly dead or in prison and Bin Laden is hiding in a cave. Muslims are confident of all kinds of nonsense because Islam makes you stupid with bigotry.

Allah is a figment of Mohammed's imagination, a fiction to give him power. Every country Islam conquers is reduced to poverty and ignorance. You are fighting for nothing but oppression and backwardness.

We are fighting for life, liberty, and the freedom to pursue happiness, a much superior creed to your barbarism which seeks to drive people back into a dark and bloody past.

WoW. I am a female college student, age 26, getting my second degree. The media caught my eye with the murder case in which 2 muslim teenagers were killed by their father. Honestly I was trying to be tolerant and say to myself: you know it must be extremists, I mean we had the Inquisition and such. Nonetheless, I started to do some more reading on the issue and it scares the doodoo out of me when I see what the Qoran is teaching these people. Like all the stoning, and violence and crazy stuff. Honestly I am scared of them. I feel like they are wild beasts, rabid beasts - and that is what makes them so terrifying. You can't reason with a rabid zombie that functions at 10 miles per hour. Silly metaphor but these people can do and have done so much harm. I honestly say that I have tried to be open minded and tried to learn more about their teachings and then MY EYES OPENED - Oh my God - these people teach some crazy shit! It's fucked up...really fucked up.

I do not approve of suicide bombers.
Either being Arabs or Japanese 'Kamikaze's.'
Jihad means that you engage in a direct face to face battle when the threat is immediate and apparent.
There has to be a direct order and/or approval from a islamic ruler chosen by the whole nation of muslims (wordwide that is) or a Khaleefah.
Which, if we pay attention, we do NOT have right now at this time.
Be verry, verry carefull what you as a muslim (I am also a Muslim) consider to be an act that is right.
Fear God and think before you end life.
After life, God does not forgive us anymore.
In our graves, we wait for the Day of Judgement and we either enjoy peace or endure 'punishment' according to the way you have lived.
I would never attack a non Muslim purely bases on my own, individual motivations and beleives.
Who ordered this girl to such an act?
Doesent she know that Suicide is one of the heaviest sins in Islam?
It means that you stop enduring your burden, which was given to you by God in the first place.
God is with the patient ones.
And please do NOT admire/romantisize the deed of this woman ( I am a woman myself), for it is truly an act that does NOT fall in the categoty of Jihad.
I know because I have studied the life of Mohammed, (peace be upon Him) and I fear God more then I fear the people in this world.
Think verry well before you are thinking of killing someone.
Especially not openly engaged in a fight.
A bomb to me does not fall in the category jihad, since she was not openly in a fight and no Islamic Khaleefah ordered it.
In the Sunah it is the way that you ask permission to a Khaleef, and since we dont have one, that in itsell should tell you enough.

Think about that and please study Quran with a open mind (without prejudice, allready made up your mind because of certain people you spoke to).
The Prohet (Peace be upon Him) said:
The Devil houses in the hearts of all of men kind.

He also said: Those who do not follow my way of life, they are not of my people.

To make thing verry clear:
I do not approve of jewish people doing the same to palestinians that Hitler did to them.
you know: throwing them out of their houses, set 'special rules' to their way of life.
i know because I live In Holland where WW2 actually took place.
I have neighbors, friends, co workers who have family that all witnessed what was done to jews.
It is said to see that they turned into this greedy monster kind of people that wants to wipe out another kind of people to make more room for themselves.
All of course, onder the line of: we are victims of 'these terrible people.'
And God is all Seeing and All knowing.

Miriam: The Nazis did NOT "throw Jews out of their homes." The Nazis took Jewish skin and made lampshades and bookbindings out of them. They took Jewish babies and injected them with antifreeze and placed them in freezers. Let's not forget gassing them. For you to compare Jews trying to live in their indigenous homeland and setting up checkpoints to keep racist Arabs from slaughtering them with anything Nazi is not only the epitome of base ignorance but happens to be legally defined as Anti Semitism in your nation of residence. You might try actually learning what happened in the Holocaust AND what is actually at play in the so called "West Bank" before you toss out any future analogies.

For the record, Palestinians are Arabs. Arabs are indigenous in only tiny portions of both Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Despite this, they now have 21 nations that stretch from the Atlantic Coast of West Africa all the way to the gates of Central Asia on the Iranian border. In all that mass that spans most of two continents the only non Arab territory is Israel. Only Jews have been able to re-assert their indigenous rights from under Arab domination, and most Arabs despise that.

What you undoubtedly call the "West Bank" was legally allocated to Jews by the unanimous vote of the League of Nations in 1920 (Ratification 1922). Jewish indigenity was cited as the rationale and Jews were specifically given legal authority to live and work in 100% of Mandatory Palestine. Not only does THAT include the so called "West Bank," but it includes Gaza AND Jordan as well! The fact that Jordan- 77% of Mandatory Palestine- was (possibly illegaly) severed from this allocation was wrong enough. The fact that pragmatism and international pressure forced Israel to agree to a re-allocation of Gaza and 40% of the so called "West Bank"' makes attitudes like yours reprehensible. That you would have Israel feel guilty for daring to exist on just 14% of its legally allocated territory is disgusting. As if Arabs do not already have enough land! As if those Arabs now calling themselves Palestinians do not have enough of a territory with 86% of Mandatory Palestine already in their hands (Jordan's population is more than 80% Palestinian, the rest imported Bedouin from Hijaz to protect its Hijazi monarchy. Even its Queen is a Palestinian).

The only "Occupiers" are Arabs.
