From a text used to teach ninth-graders in Saudi Arabia called "Commentary on Monotheism" by Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab, printed in 2005-6, Chapter 12, page 100:"If a photographer takes a picture of a being with a soul created by Allah, he is committing a grave sin, and deserves a severe punishment. This is one of the acts that detract from the monotheism of the believer, because it is an imitation of God's creation, and a form of polytheism. Whoever takes such a photograph will be most severely tormented on Judgment Day. He will be tormented by his own creations. For every picture he has taken, a spirit will be sent to torment him in hell."

Maybe this makes sense to you but it's just nonsense to the sane people.
Hi, I would like to clearify something regarding the word "Photography" in this text you mentioned. The translation of the word is not correct I know the original text in Arabic, and it does not mean Photography in the way you understood it, it does not mean film nor motion photography - and thats probably not your fault but the translator's- rather it means the act of making statues of living souls such as humans, birds, or anything that is alive.
The word "Tasweer" in Formal Arabic used to mean this that I just mentioned above, and then in the age of photography the same word was used to describe film photography, hence the confusion.
As you might imagine photography was not known 1400 years ago so even if you didn't beleive that there is an error in translation you would be able to know that that can't be true.
Statues of living things was not recommended by Islam, that was very noticable in the Islamic Art & Archeitcural style throughout Islamic history, the art Muslims produce was mainly about arches, fancy handwrittings, and the like.

It is not important that non-muslims understand the correct translation. What is important is that MUSLIMS understand the translation properly. Unless Al-Wahhab's text is entirely mistranslated, I think Al-Wahhab ment taking photographs. After all, if he ment building statues, the garbled translation would have been "if a person carves a picture of a being with a sould created by Allah..." and not "If a PHOTOGRAPHER TAKES a PICTURES..," .

Yes the translation is "off" but the simple fact remains is the text is being actively interpreted as "photos". I have experienced it myself in Saudi having had my film taken from me in Jeddah by the "police" as a result.

I'd be very interested in your experiences in Saudi Arabia if you'd care to share them.
My experience I have to say is nothing short of positive. The Saudis are for the most part a warm friendly people who are stuck in a country that is in an ongoing clash of old vs new. Your average Saudi wants the same thing an average any person in the "west" wants. They want to live, be free, have a family. etc. Granted you do have a certain "ilk" who have perverted Islam into something it is not and they are very vocal and violent. But the vast majority of Saudis do not subscribe to that train of thought.
This doesn't mean they are all holding hands and praising and loving the US. They have issues with US Policy but that doesn't mean they hate Americans as a general rule.
The only "bad" experience was the incident in Jeddah I described above. After my film was taken I promptly reloaded and went on my merry way. There where no there problems.
You should go to Saudi for a visit if you get the chance. Nothing is better than seeing things first hand. Then you can pop over to Bahrain and I will buy you a beer or two!

Can you even go to Saudi Arabia? My understanding is that they don't hand out tourist visas to non-Muslims.
I have no problem in getting a visa. You need a "sponsor" and I have one.
You are somewhat correct that as a general rule you just can't go to your local travel agency and book a trip. I have heard that the powers to be in Saudi are opening up a bit for "tourists" but I don't have any details.
